Why is the Maritime Forest Threatened?

When beachfront homeowners decided to sue the Town of Sullivan's Island because of the Maritime Forest, it started several years of a legal battle that have ended in this controversial "mediation" that is now threatening the future of the forest.

Three Things You Can Do to Stop the Chop!

The deforestation of Sullivan’s Island is much larger than just an “island” issue. This land was put into a public trust for the benefit and enjoyment of ALL of us — and decisions on how our maritime forest is managed, should not be left in the hands of two private homeowners who want ocean views and breezes. Forest Celebration Walk November 8th!

Join us for a beautiful fall tour of the Maritime Forest! People of all ages are welcome. The tour will include the ADA accessible beach trail through a section of the maritime forest.

MARITIME FOREST UNDER ATTACK AGAIN IN COURT

A small group of front beach homeowners are back in court trying to cut the maritime forest. This case is being heard at the SC Court of Appeals that could potentially overturn a key victory for the forest won in 2023.

Appeal Filed to Overturn Ruling that Saved Maritime Forest

As you are aware, on January 30, 2023, in a blockbuster victory for the environment, a South Carolina Circuit Court invalidated the Settlement Agreement entered into by a previous Town Council that would have allowed the destruction of our unique Maritime Forest. But that is, unfortunately, not where our effort to save the maritime forest ends!
