From the maritime forest to the sea, the Sullivan’s Island Earth Day Celebration will be fun and informative! Visit with members of Sullivan’s Island For All to talk about the Maritime Forest or go on a guided tour. Check-in with the Sullivan’s Island Turtle Team to learn how this year’s turtle nesting season is going. The Poe Library will be offering Haiku Poetry and art activities for kids, along with an author book signing of Low-Ku Haikus of the Lowcountry. Watch a live demonstration at the Sullivans Island Bird Banding Station or go on a guided nature walk of the maritime forest.
This event is part of Lowcountry Earth Week, a collaborative initiative of over 40 local conservation organizations taking place from April 15-22, 2023. The week-long celebration of the region’s natural beauty and resources features a variety of clean-ups, festivals, nature activities, and workshops. Watch a banding demonstration and learn more about the birds we can find here in the Lowcountry during Spring migration. Come learn about how a bird banding station operates and why scientific research on migratory and resident birds is so important. The Sullivan’s Island Bird Banding Station is a long-term monitoring station located on the protected land at Station 16 on Sullivan’s Island. The maritime forest and surrounding habitats provide an important stopover, overwintering and breeding habitat for many species of birds.

NATURE WALK

Please join the Sullivan’s Island for All Nature Walk led by biologist and herbalist April Punsalan. Did you know there are dozens of plants in the maritime forest that have medicinal value? April will walk you through the forest and show you these wonders of nature. The walk will last one hour and will depart from the Station 16 Beach Path on Sullivan’s Island. Pre-registration is required and the tour can accommodate 20 participants. Don’t miss this insightful view of the Maritime Forest — you will never look at the trees the same again!
